Painted Legend:

"Legend, a side-scrolling hack and slash beat 'em up video game, was developed by Arcade Zone and initially published in North America by Seika Corporation in April 1994. It later became available in Europe through Sony Electronic Publishing on December 21 of the same year, exclusively for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game marked the debut project of Carlo Perconti and Lyes Belaidouni at Arcade Zone, both of whom would later go on to establish Toka and HyperDevbox Japan, respectively.

Set in the fictional medieval kingdom of Sellech, the game follows players assuming the roles of knight warriors Kaor and Igor as they strive to thwart the corrupt ruler's son, Clovis. Clovis seeks to tap into the imprisoned soul of malevolent despot Beldor to conquer the land. Drawing inspiration from various high-fantasy medieval-themed beat 'em up arcade games from companies like Capcom and Sega, Legend was conceived by Perconti and Belaidouni as their action-oriented brainchild.

Upon its original release on the Super NES, Legend received mixed reviews. While the game's graphics earned acclaim, its gameplay was criticized for being repetitive and lacking depth. Despite not receiving a direct sequel, Toka created a PlayStation remake of the game also titled 'Legend.' In 2015, the original game was ported to Microsoft Windows by independent developer and publisher Piko Interactive. Although Perconti and Belaidouni had plans for a spiritual successor called 'Konan' for the Atari Jaguar, it never materialized or saw a release.

Gameplay:

Legend is an arcade-style side-scrolling hack and slash beat 'em up game akin to titles like 'Golden Axe' and 'The King of Dragons.' Players guide Kaor and Igor through seven diverse stages set in the kingdom of Sellech, battling a variety of enemies. Their primary objective is to defeat Clovis before he unleashes Beldor's sealed powers and takes over Sellech. The characters possess several combat abilities, including swordplay, kicks, and magic spells. Additionally, players can block incoming enemy attacks using shields and execute special techniques by inputting specific button combinations, at the cost of health. Defeating certain enemies yields items like food, magic bags, and extra lives. After completing a level, players are taken to a bonus round where they can collect items for points or later use in the game. Notably, one of the seven stages can only be accessed if players are captured by enemies and imprisoned during a boss fight. The options menu allows players to customize their clothing color and adjust difficulty settings or share lives during co-op play.

The game's narrative centers around the malevolent reign of Beldor, who terrorized the kingdom of Sellech for a millennium, bringing chaos and destruction. Numerous knights embarked on crusades to overthrow him, but none returned. Eventually, people created empowered heroes who sealed Beldor's soul, bringing peace to the land. However, Clovis, the corrupt son of the Sellech king, seeks to harness Beldor's power to conquer the kingdom. Players step into the shoes of knight warriors Kaor and Igor to defeat Clovis. Along their journey, they encounter townsfolk who aid their quest, battle various enemies and creatures, and ultimately reach the sanctuary where Clovis resides. After a final showdown, Beldor's soul is banished from the land, and their triumphant victory is celebrated worldwide.

Carlo Perconti previously worked as a freelance graphic designer for companies like Loriciels and Titus Interactive, while Lyes Belaidouni also worked in a similar capacity at Titus Interactive, primarily focused on developing racing games for Amstrad home computers and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Belaidouni had a preference for action-oriented titles but resigned from Titus due to the company's direction and reluctance to develop for the Super NES. Along with Perconti and marketing manager Gabriel Guary, they founded their game development company, Arcade Zone, to create titles for home consoles. Their initial idea was to create a beat 'em up game, a genre not widely explored in North America and Europe in the 1990s. They drew inspiration from arcade games by Capcom and Sega, such as 'Knights of the Round,' 'Golden Axe,' and 'The King of Dragons,' with Perconti emphasizing that they created the game they wanted to play.

Development And Release:

The two co-founders were the sole creators of 'Legend,' developed as a passion project under challenging conditions and on a tight schedule of two to three months. This marked the company's first project, with Perconti handling programming duties. The game was built from scratch, as the team lacked financial support, access to a software library, or an official Nintendo development kit for the Super NES. Guary oversaw the business aspects of the company. Belaidouni crafted all the artwork for backgrounds and characters using Deluxe Paint on Amiga before transferring it to PC for Perconti, who managed hardware coordination and other tasks. Following development, the game made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show, where Capcom also showcased the Super NES conversion of 'The King of Dragons.'

'Legend' was initially released in North America in April 1994 by Seika Corporation, followed by a European release through Sony Electronic Publishing on December 24 of the same year. The absence of a Japanese release was attributed to the company's lack of contacts and market competition in the region. While specific sales figures from its original lifetime remain unknown, Perconti stated that the game performed well. In 2015, Piko Interactive ported the title to Microsoft Windows, releasing it on Steam. Two years later, the original Super NES version received a worldwide re-release courtesy of Piko Interactive."
